Stunning Sights in Scenic Samoa

Delve into the culture & history of the Samoan people on Upolu, with comprehensive tours around the whole island.

About Your Trip

Welcome to the Samoan island of Upolu. With more than 3,000 years in the making, it has fostered a way of life like nowhere else on earth. When you combine that with its intoxicating landscape, you’ll never want to leave!

You’ll learn all about Samoa’s ancient history and culture with insightful tours of landmarks, markets and museums, including one devoted to Robert Louis Stevenson. Spend time on a tranquil beach, and then, for a truly unique experience, swim in a cenote-type hole cut out of lava rock. See demonstrations in coconut husking and fire starting, activities that are part of Samoan daily life. Along the way, marvel at the magnificent coastline of sandy beaches, coral reefs, mangrove forests and coastal plains. At one point, you’ll cut across the interior of the island, passing by dense rainforest, volcanic mountains and cascading waterfalls. You may even get a glimpse of the mighty Mt. Fito, rising 3,600 feet (1,100 meters).

What we love:
• During your time in Samoa, you’ll hear the phrase Fa’a Samao, which means "The Samoan Way," a deeply rooted, complex cultural code based on respect for the environment, family and traditional values.
• Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted with a traditional lei, a wreath of flowers symbolizing affection.
• In 1889, Upolu became home to Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson who authored "Treasure Island." He was so beloved by the Samoans that he was given the nickname Tusitala, meaning "Teller of Tales."

Destination

Saying that Samoa — a country with a history dating back around 3,500 years — has a rich past is an understatement. The small island nation possesses a unique language and cultural identity due to its remoteness and impeccable landscape and climate. The customary fale, a building with no walls, is still used as the shared residence of many Samoans and mirrors their communal way of life. However, the Samoan islands were produced by volatile volcanic activity, making it ironic that the general atmosphere is permeated with calmness and altruism. The same can be said for the customary practice of tattooing, a symbol of respect, unlike in most other countries around the globe. A humble place devoid of flashy attractions, Samoa is a destination as warmly welcoming as the island sun.
